AHI Forum Examines Cyprus’s Banking Crisis

WASHINGTON, DC — The American Hellenic Institute (AHI) hosted a noon forum discussion on the topic of “Cyprus Banking Crisis: Facts and Implications for the Future,” featuring Nicholas G. Karambelas, Esq., partner, Sfikas and Karambelas, and AHI Legal Counsel. The forum was held March 28, 2013 at AHI’s Hellenic House.

“The banking crisis in Cyprus has dominated headlines around the world and impacted financial markets,” said AHI President Nick Larigakis.  “We felt it timely to host a forum to explain what transpired, the ramifications of the crisis, and where Cyprus goes from here, including potential steps it can take to remedy the situation.”

Karambelas’s presentation began with providing a brief background of the Turkish invasion and ongoing occupation of the island as well as Cyprus’s history within the Eurozone. He then went on to present the context for the current banking crisis and the details and implications of the agreed upon deal between Cyprus and the European Union.

Following Karambelas’s presentation, President Larigakis offered closing remarks, and he moderated a Q&A session with the audience.

The American Hellenic Institute is a non-profit Greek American think-tank and public policy center that works to strengthen relations between the United States and Greece and Cyprus, and within the Greek American community.
