Statement By Eugene T. Rossides, AHI General Counsel, On Signing Of Memorandum Of Cooperation Between The U.S. And Greece On Crime And Terrorism

"On September 8, 2000 Attorney General Janet Reno and Mr. Michalis Chrysohoidis, Minister of Public Order, signed a memorandum of understanding between the U.S. and Greece on issues of terrorism, crime and law enforcement. The memorandum sets out areas of enhanced cooperation between Greece and the U.S. law enforcement agencies. In addition to terrorism and organized crime, these areas include financial crime, money laundering and fugitives.

The American Hellenic Institute welcomes the signing of this memorandum. It sets the stage for intensified cooperation between the U.S. and Greece on a range of dangerous global threats. The threat of terrorism in particular is universal and requires the closest possible cooperation between all states.

AHI congratulates Greece on this important step forward in the fight against terrorism. We believe that Greece has been unfairly singled out for criticism on this issue. We hope that the signing of this memorandum will lay to rest once and for all the ill-founded allegations that Greece is not cooperating fully on terrorism."
