AHI Holds Legislative Conference In Boston

On March 11, 2000 the American Hellenic Institute held a legislative conference in Boston, Massachusetts. The conference was held in co-operation with the AHI Boston Chapter and was co-sponsored by the Order of AHEPA and the Foundation for Hellenic Studies. This was the third in a series of conferences designed to provide information on issues of key interest to the Greek American community in this important election year. AHEPA Supreme President George J. Dariotis has stated that the objective of this "unique cooperation" between AHEPA and AHI is to deliver "better results" for the community."

The conference covered the following topics:

  1. Cyprus and American Foreign Policy: The Evolving Picture
    Speaker: Professor Van Coufoudakis, Dean School of Arts and Sciences, Indiana University-Purdue University, Fort Wayne, Indiana
  2. The Role of the Greek American Media
    Speaker: Ms. Nancy Agris Savage, Editor, The Hellenic Chronicle
  3. The E.U. Summit: Implications for U.S. Policy towards Greece, Cyprus and Turkey and the Challenges for the Greek American Community
    Speaker: Mr. Eugene T. Rossides, President, AHI Foundation
  4. Current Legislative Initiatives regarding Cyprus and the Aegean issues for the 2nd Session of the 106th Congress
    Speaker: Mr. Nick Larigakis, Executive Director, AHI
  5. Workshop on Lobbying
    Speakers: Mr. Jonathan Clarke, Public Affairs Consultant, AHI; Nick Karambelas, Esq., Partner Sfikas Karambelas & Akaras LLP.

Following an introduction from Luncheon Chairman Dr. Panos D. Spiliakos, Director of Development and Alumni, Hellenic College and Holy Cross and remarks by Honorary Conference Chairman Mr. George D. Behrakis, Chairman, Gainsborough Investments, Mr. George Hadjimichelakis, Consul General for Greece in Boston, and Dr. John Papajohn, Honorary Consul of Cyprus in Boston, delivered greetings.

Mr. Jimmy S. Pappas, President, AHI Boston Chapter, acted as moderator and Mr. George Chryssis, Chairman, Arcadian Capital Management LLC, was the conference chairman.
