AHI Sends Letter To Governor Siegelman Of Alabama Requesting Withdrawal Of Historically Inaccurate Proclamation On Turkey And Releases Action Alert

The American Hellenic Institute on August 28, 2001 submitted a letter to Governor Don Siegelman of Alabama responding to a historically inaccurate and revisionist proclamation, issued on August 8, 2001 regarding events in Turkey. The proclamation commemorates August 30, 2001 as a "Day of Remembrance of the Turkish Tragedy for Liberation to Sovereignty and Independence." In the letter, AHI calls on Governor Siegelman to reconsider and withdraw this proclamation that addresses the events occurring in Turkey during 1912-1922 and thereafter as a substantial portion of the document is replete with factual inaccuracies and omissions.

Attached is AHI's letter to the Governor of Alabama regarding his proclamation (click here) and Action Alert to the community (click here) .

The Governor released a revised proclamation which still contains serious errors of fact and omission. AHI's comments on the revised proclamation will be issued later today (click here) .
