New U.S. Ambassador To Cyprus Visits Hellenic House

WASHINGTON, DC—On Tuesday, August 20, 2002, newly-confirmed U.S. Ambassador to Cyprus Michael Klosson visited Hellenic House for a one-hour meeting with American Hellenic Institute (AHI) leadership and staff. The Ambassador was accompanied by James Seevers, Cyprus Desk Officer at the U.S. Department of State.

The AHI attendees had the opportunity to voice their perspectives on items of mutual interest regarding U.S. relations with Cyprus, with an emphasis on the need for the U.S. to press Turkey and particularly the Turkish military for a settlement of the 28-year occupation of the island. A vigorous discussion ensued at which time Ambassador Klosson pledged that the U.S. would remain very active in supporting the UN's efforts to bring about a settlement in the best interests of both parties on the island.

Attendees included: AHI Chairman James Marketos; AHIPAC General Counsel Nick Karambelas; Hellenic American Women's Council co-founder and AHI member Theodora Hancock; AHI members Jim Pedas, Ted Pedas and Art Dimopoulos; and AHI founder Gene Rossides.

Ambassador Klosson is a career Foreign Service officer, serving the U.S. Department of State for 27 years in both European and Asian affairs. Most recently, Ambassador Klosson served as Consul General in Hong Kong, beginning in August 1999. Among his European postings, Ambassador Klosson was appointed Director of the Secretariat Staff in the Office of the Secretary of State in 1978 where he served until 1990. From 1990-93, he served as Deputy Chief of Mission and Charge d'Affaires for 10 months at the U.S. Embassy in Stockholm, Sweden. From 1993-96, he served as Charge d'Affaires for 10 months at the U.S. Embassy in Stockholm, Sweden. From 1993-96, he served as Charge d'Affaires and then Deputy Chief of Mission at the U.S. Embassy in the Hague, the Netherlands.
