Greek Minister of Public Order Georgios Voulgarakis Honored at AHI Dinner

WASHINGTON, DC—On April 12, 2005, the American Hellenic Institute in cooperation with the Hellenic American National Council hosted a dinner in honor of Georgios Voulgarakis, Greek Minister of Public Order, at the Renaissance Mayflower Hotel in Washington, DC.

The program began with AHI Executive Director Nick Larigakis welcoming Mr. Voulgarakis and the guests of the evening. After dinner, the Ambassador of Greece George Savvaides offered his greetings to the audience and addressed the accomplishments of Mr. Voulgarakis, led by the successful security strategy of the Athens 2004 Olympic Games.

During the course of the evening, Mr. Voulgarakis was presented with the Medal of Hellenism from Theodore G. Spyropoulos, President of the Hellenic American National Council, and the Hellenic Heritage National Public Service Award from Gene Rossides, President of the American Hellenic Institute, for his outstanding achievements and service to Greece. Mr. Voulgarakis gave a speech and showed video footage of the Athens 2004 Olympic Games preparations and tactics used to combat potential terrorist activities.

Ending the event, Congresswoman Carolyn Maloney (D-NY), in a surprise appearance, offered her congratulations to Minister Voulgarakis and thanked him for providing a safe and successful Olympic Games and for his continuing service to Greece.

Georgios Voulgarakis has been a member of New Democracy’s Central Committee for 10 years, where he served as the elected member responsible for Educational (1999-00) and Development Issues (2000-01). From 1989-1990, Mr. Voulgarakis was Secretary of the Greek Parliament, while also serving as Deputy Minister of Environment, Planning and Public Constructions. In 1998, Mr. Voulgarakis was New Democracy’s Deputy Representative of Parliament.

He is currently a Member of the Parliament Committee of Peace and Friendship between Greece, Australia and India. In addition, he is a member of the Defense and Foreign Affairs Committee. Mr. Voulgarakis also represents Greece at the European Council. After New Democracy won the elections March 7, 2004, he was once again elected Member of the Parliament, and appointed by the Prime Minister to be the Minister of Public Order.
