Greek Minister of Economy and Finance George Alogoskoufis Visits AHI Hellenic House Headquarters

WASHINGTON, DC—On September 23, 2005, the Greek Minister of Economy and Finance, George Alogoskoufis accompanied by a small delegation of the Minister’s staff and advisers, visited the American Hellenic Institute’s headquarters, the Hellenic House while in Washington, DC for the World Bank and IMF meetings. While at Hellenic House, the Minister met with members of the AHI leadership, including Legal Counsel Nick Karambelas, Chairman James Marketos, AHI President Gene Rossides, Executive Director Nick Larigakis and the AHI staff.

During the one-hour meeting, the discussion centered on items of mutual interest pertaining to issues dealing with potential U.S.-Greek economic cooperation and alliances, as well as ways to increase bilateral economic ties through U.S. investments in Greece.

Minister Alogoskoufis emphasized the growth potential of the EU economies and especially the role Greece can play as a "gateway" to the region. He stated that Greece is in a strategic and economic position for growth following the Olympic Games and the recent reforms in the Greek economy which have targeted privatization. He said that although there are certain challenges in the economy, Greece is growing at the fastest rate in the Eurozone and that the recent reforms will cause a positive change.

"We were honored to have Minister Alogoskoufis visit Hellenic House along with key ministry officials. We look forward to working together in the future to facilitate common objectives to strengthen U.S. relations with Greece via business opportunities," said AHI President Gene Rossides.
