Greek Foreign Minister Dora Bakoyannis Dedicates New Chancery Building of the Embassy of Greece in Washington, D.C.

WASHINGTON, DC—On Tuesday, September 26, 2006, Greek Foreign Minister Dora Bakoyannis dedicated the new Chancery building of the Embassy of Greece in Washington, DC.

There were many dignitaries who attended this event in the nation’s capital. Persons who spoke and congratulated the Greek Ambassador, Alexandros Mallias and the government of Greece were, among others, Senator Paul Sarbanes (D-MD) and Undersecretary of State for Public Diplomacy and Public Affairs, Henrietta H. Fore.

The main dedication address was given by Greek Foreign Minister Dora Bakoyannis. In her comments she referred to the traditional good relations between the United States and Greece throughout the past century.

Also attending the dedication were members of the American Hellenic Institute leadership and staff.

“This is a wonderful new building and one that the Greek government and the people of Greece can be proud of. In many ways it is very timely in that this building helps to underscore Greece’s emerging leadership role on the international stage. In 2004 Greece hosted a magnificent Olympic games; Greece is uniquely positioned to continue to promote economic growth and stability and provide a strategic role in the Balkans and the greater Southeastern Mediterranean; Greece has a strong bilateral relationship with the United States; Greece recently presided as the rotating president of the U.N Security Council; and Greece is in both NATO and the EU,” said AHI Executive Director, Nick Larigakis.
