Greece’s Alternate Foreign Minister Visits Hellenic House

Commends AHI’s Policy Work, Study Abroad Program

WASHINGTON, DC—Greece’s Alternate Foreign Minister Dimitris Droutsas visited the American Hellenic Institute’s (AHI) Hellenic House on Tuesday, February 2, 2010 as part of his fast-paced, one-day trip to Washington, DC, to discuss issues of mutual interest affecting U.S.-Greece relations.

“We appreciated Alternate Foreign Minister Droutsas taking time out of his intense schedule to visit Hellenic House and meet with us,” said Executive Director Nick Larigakis. “We welcome the value he placed on AHI’s work and our role in the Greek American community. We look forward to continuing our working relationship with him on Greek American issues and other initiatives that strengthen U.S.-Greece relations.”

Droutsas commended AHI for its efforts to promote and advance Greek American policy issues in Washington. He placed special emphasis on the success of AHI’s inaugural Foreign Policy Study Abroad Program for college students for which he provided a briefing last summer.

As part of his visit to Washington, Droutsas met with Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton, Deputy Secretary of State James Steinberg, U.S. Sen. Benjamin Cardin (D-MD), who chairs the U.S. Helsinki Commission; and U.S. Rep. Howard Berman, who chairs the House Committee on Foreign Affairs. Following his Washington visit, Droutsas traveled to New York City to meet with UN officials and to speak at Columbia University.

The American Hellenic Institute is a non-profit Greek American think-tank and public policy center that works to strengthen relations between the United States and Greece and Cyprus, and within the Greek American community.
