The Hill Publishes Op-ed on Cyprus by Former U.S. Ambassador to Cyprus

WASHINGTON, DC —The American Hellenic Institute (AHI) brings to your attention an op-ed by Ambassador Donald K. Bandler titled “The US and EU have a role to play in Cyprus reunification” that appeared July 7, 2011, in The Hill.  Ambassador Bandler is a former American ambassador to the Republic of Cyprus, serving at that post from 1999 to 2002.

Ambassador Bandler firmly believes that Cyprus is committed to reunification and notes the strategic importance of Cyprus in his piece. He also mentions Turkey’s large military presence on the island, and as a result of Turkey’s invasion, the “human rights violations, thousands of refugees - settlers from Turkey in northern Cyprus - lost property, missing persons, ethnic separation and the destruction and neglect of cultural heritage sites” that all occurred as a result of the invasion, occupation, and division of Cyprus.  In the ambassador’s view, a settlement cannot be achieved without Turkey’s cooperation, and for that to occur, the U.S. and EU “have an important role to play.”
