AHI Legal Counsel Appears on NPR’s “The Diane Rehm Show” to Discuss Cyprus Banking Crisis

Karambelas: Possible Resolution Exists if Turkey Complies with ECHR Judgment, Pays Compensation

WASHINGTON, DC — Nicholas G. Karambelas, Esq., legal counsel, American Hellenic Institute (AHI) appeared on National Public Radio’s “The Diane Rehm Show” on Thurs.., March 21, 2013, to discuss the “Cyprus and EU Bailouts.”  Tom Gjelton guest hosted the show which aired on WAMU 88.5 FM in Washington, DC. 

Nicholas Schrifin, correspondent, ABC News; Sheila Bair, senior adviser, The Pew Charitable Trusts and former chair of Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation; and Jacob Kirkegaard, research fellow, Peterson Institute and senior associate at Rhodium Group, a New York-based research firm; joined Karambelas on the panel.

Karambelas explained the events leading up to the Cyprus banking crisis, the development of Cyprus as an international banking center, and the choices for Cyprus and their implications.  He also discussed the effect of the crisis on the euro and offered that a means for resolving the crisis would be for Turkey to comply with the judgment of the European Court of Human Rights in the case of Cyprus v. Turkey and pay compensation and damages to Cyprus for its invasion and continued occupation of one third of Cyprus.
