AHI Mourns the Passing of the former President of Cyprus, Tassos Papadopoulos

The American Hellenic Institute expresses its deepest sorrow on the passing of the former President of Cyprus, Tassos Papadopoulos.

President Papadopoulos was a statesman of high integrity and profound dignity who spent the greater part of his life advancing the just and righteous cause for his beloved island nation, Cyprus.  He understood that the proper course of action to secure a viable and long lasting solution to unite Cyprus was etched fundamentally in the rule of law, international law, democratic norms and respect for the United Nations.

President Papadopoulos was an intense man who was bound by his principles and love for his country, and therefore, never allowed himself to have these guiding beacons be compromised for the sake of political expediency.  For this, the people of Cyprus should be grateful.

President Papadopoulos also keenly understood the commitments and responsibilities that come with being part of an international community of nations whose common agenda is to defend the principles of democracy.  To this extent the United States was able to count on his support on several occasions to assist in the preservation of these Western democratic values.

While he did not live to see a free and united Cyprus, there is no doubt that by his leadership and vision, he paved the way for the people of Cyprus to succeed in their ultimate just cause.

May His Memory Be Eternal!
