AHI Applauds Dr. Carpenter’s Commentary on Cyprus

WASHINGTON, DC — The American Hellenic Institute (AHI) applauds Dr. Ted Galen Carpenter’s commentary “Sacrificing an Island: Will the West give up Cyprus to placate an irritable Turkey?” that appeared in The Washington Times on November 19, 2010.  Dr. Carpenter is the vice president for Defense and Foreign Policy Studies at Cato Institute.

“Dr. Carpenter has made numerous presentations at AHI and AHI Foundation-sponsored conferences that have provided critical analyses of policies in the eastern Mediterranean,” said Executive Director Nick Larigakis.  “We welcome and strongly agree with his excellent commentary on the current situation regarding the ongoing Cyprus settlement talks.  Former British Foreign Secretary Jack Straw’s proposal of partition for Cyprus is simply unacceptable.”

In his commentary Dr. Carpenter writes about Straw’s proposal of partition, “Going down that path would be a mistake – for both practical and moral reasons.”
