AHI Letter to Secretary Clinton Referenced in Press Briefing; State Department Official States Issues Will Be Raised in Meetings

WASHINGTON, DC — A senior state department official confirmed “regional issues with Turkey” will be raised by Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton when she meets with Turkish officials in Turkey today and tomorrow. The senior state department official spoke during a background briefing held with members of the diplomatic press corps en route to Istanbul on July 14, 2011. A reporter referenced the American Hellenic Institute’s (AHI’s) July 12, 2011 letter to Secretary Clinton, which prompted the reply from the senior state department official.

The senior state department official stated: “I think you can be sure that she will raise regional issues with Turkey, and they’ll talk about Greece and they’ll talk about Cyprus and they’ll talk about domestic developments in Turkey as they always do.  So that will definitely be a part of the conversation.”

The AHI letter presented issues of concern to the Greek American community that exist in southeast Europe and the eastern Mediterranean. The issues are based within the universally accepted principles of the rule of law and international law, including U.S. laws. AHI’s positions support the best interests of the United States.
