AHI Foundation Study Abroad Students’ Experiences Published

WASHINGTON, DC — Aspasia (Sia) Bartell, a second-year MBA student from the University of Washington, Foster School of Business; and Yiannis Konstandinos Floropoulos, a graduate assistant who is studying Law and Governance at Montclair State University in New Jersey, participants on the 2011 American Hellenic Institute Foundation (AHIF) College Student Foreign Policy Trip to Greece and Cyprus, had their experiences published recently.

The Foster School’s blog, Foster Unplugged, published Bartell’s account on September 29, 2011. Being an MBA candidate, Bartell’s account closely examined the business environment of Greece and Cyprus.

“This trip was a phenomenal experience that illustrated how the world is becoming increasingly interconnected and that the business leaders of both today and tomorrow need to have an international view,” wrote Bartell.

The blog was also posted on the Foster School and UW Global Business Center Facebook pages and came up in the news feed of over 3,500 page fans. To view the blog, please click here.

Floropoulos, had his experience published in the fall 2011 edition of the official publication of AHEPA John G. Thevos District 5, AHEPA Voice, which encompasses New Jersey and Delaware. He is the current District 5 Governor for the Sons of Pericles, the junior men’s auxiliary of AHEPA.

He reflected about the leg in Cyprus, “As Greek Americans and as Ahepans we need not forget our brothers and sisters in Cyprus. I have witnessed desecrated graveyards, broken tombstones, unearthed bones and remains; destroyed churches painted with bird and animal excrement, another church as a gambling sports café, and another as a mosque.”

“We are pleased that Aspasia and Yianni were able to share their experiences with their professors, peers, and communities,” said AHI President Nick Larigakis. “We thank Foster Unplugged and the AHEPA Voice for publishing their accounts. We look forward to providing many more students, like Aspasia and Yianni, with the opportunity to experience the same emotions and to learn more about the history and politics of the eastern Mediterranean region.”

Four AHIF College Student Foreign Policy Trip participants have had their experiences published.

The American Hellenic Institute is a non-profit Greek American public policy center that works to strengthen relations between the United States and Greece and Cyprus, and within the Greek American community.
