| FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE CONTACT: JONATHAN CLARKE AMERICAN HELLENIC INSTITUTE FOUNDATION TO SPONSOR CAPITOL HILL CONFERENCE ON CYPRUS The American Hellenic Institute Foundation (AHIF) in cooperation with the Hellenic American National Council (HANC) and Hellenic American Women's Council (HAWC) will hold a conference on Wednesday June 10, 1998, on Capitol Hill on The United States and Cyprus: The Challenge for American Foreign Policy. The conference will review efforts for resolving the "Cyprus Problem" and will examine why 24 years after the Turkish invasion and 9 years after the end of the Cold War, Turkish troops still occupy 37.3% of Cyprus and a settlement has not been achieved. The conference will examine the U.S. role in Cyprus and will identify the errors of U.S. policy that have contributed to the current deadlock on Cyprus, including the "mistakes" acknowledged by Ambassador Richard Holbrooke in Cyprus in November 1997. The conference will also highlight the underlying stakes for U.S. diplomacy and discuss the measures by which the U.S. may best promote a solution to the Cyprus problem in view of the on-going initiatives led by Ambassador Holbrooke and the new opportunities that have been created by the opening of accession negotiations between the European Union and Cyprus. The conference will be held on Capitol Hill in the Rayburn House Office Building, Room 2105, with the luncheon in the Capitol in Room HC5. Conference chairman Eugene T. Rossides, AHIF President, announced that Dr. Van Coufoudakis, Dean of the School of Art and Sciences, Indiana University-Purdue University and the leading academic expert in the United States on Cyprus, will be the program coordinator for the conference. Speakers will include Senator Gordon Smith (R-OR), Chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Subcommittee on European Affairs, other Members of Congress, and Administration officials. |
