Legislative Policy Conference in San Diego, CA Addressed by Congressman Randy Cunningham

On January 23, 1999 the American Hellenic Institute Public Affairs Committee (AHIPAC) held a Legislative Policy Conference in San Diego, California. The conference was cosponsored by the Foundation for Hellenic Studies, the Hellenic American National Council, and Hellenic American Women's Council in cooperation with AHEPA chapters #505, #223, and #444.

The featured speaker was Representative Randy "Duke" Cunningham (R-CA 51st). As on previous occasions, Representative Cunningham delivered a stirring speech in advocacy of a more favorable U.S. approach to issues of concern to Greek Americans. other speakers included Mr. George Karetas, President, AHI San Diego Chapter, Professor Van Coufoudakis, Dean of School of Arts and Sciences, Indiana University-Purdue University, Mr. Nick Karambelas, Partner, Sfikas, Karambelas, and Akaras, LLP, Mr. Eugene T. Rossides, General Counsel, AHIPAC, and Mr. Nick Larigakis, Executive Director, AHI.

Mr. Arthur Pathe, President, AHEPA Chapter #505, moderated the conference. Mr. John Koutsoukos, President, AHEPA Chapter #223, and Mr. Pete Kozis, President, AHEPA Chapter #444, acted as co-chairmen of the luncheon.

In the evening a dinner was held at the San Diego Museum of Art for the benefit of Hellenic House. The special guest was Mr. George Avgoustis, Consul General of Greece in Los Angeles. AHI is grateful to Mr. and Mrs. George Karetas for graciously hosting this very successful event.

AHIPAC Legislative Policy Conferences are a service to AHI members. Held on a regular basis throughout the nation, they are designed to encourage contact between AHI members and their local congressional representatives. The conferences also provide briefing on the latest information from Washington regarding relations between the U.S. and Greece and Cyprus.
