AHI Statement On Pledge Of Vice-President Al Gore Regarding Cyprus

The American Hellenic Institute notes the recent statement regarding Cyprus issued by Vice President Al Gore to various Greek American organizations. This statement repeats but does not add to the detailed response issued by Mr. Gore on August 11, 2000 in reply to the questionnaire on Greek American issues submitted by the American Hellenic Institute Public Affairs Committee (AHIPAC). This response was made available in AHI's press release No 41 (click here) of August 11, 2000. This may be found on the AHI website www.ahiworld.org.

In August, AHIPAC faulted Mr. Gore's statement about Cyprus as "very general in nature" and lacking "specific answers" on the appropriate policy to be adopted. These reservations are also applicable to Mr. Gore's more recent statements. AHI has been disappointed that the Clinton-Gore administration has not carried out its 1992 campaign pladges on Cyprus.

AHI looks forward to working with the next administration, be it Democrat or Republican, to foster a just and equitable settlement in accordance with international law and democratic norms.
