Michael Cacoyannis, Academy Award-Nominated Director Of Zorba The Greek, To Be Honored By The AHIF In an evening celebration at the Grand Hyatt Hotel in New York City on Saturday,June 9, 2001, the American Hellenic Institute Foundation (AHIF) will honor the life and achievements of the world-renowned and Academy Award-nominated film director Michael Cacoyannis. Mr. Cacoyannis will be presented with theAHI Hellenic Heritage Lifetime Achievement Award. George Veras, President of Veras Communications, is the guest speaker for the dinner gala, which will pay special tribute to the accomplishments of the celebrated film director. Entertainment for the evening will be provided by the renowned baritone Phillip Cokorinos who will further highlight Michael Cacoyannis' accomplishments as he performs songs related to the honoree. Born in Limassol, Cyprus, Michael Cacoyannis has earned the respect and admiration of countless fans throughout the world. His biggest hit, based on a novel by Nikos Kazantzakis, was Zorba the Greek (1964) starring the late-Anthony Quinn as Alexis Zorba. The character of Zorba, so skillfully directed by Mr. Cacoyannis, is perhaps the most memorable of the many roles Mr. Quinn played throughout his long and celebrated career.
