AHI Sends Followup Letter To Governor Siegelman Of Alabama Requesting Withdrawal Of Historically Inaccurate Proclamation On Turkey

The American Hellenic Institute on August 29, 2001 submitted a second letter responding to a revised proclamation issued by Governor Don Siegelman of Alabama. The proclamation commemorates August 30, 2001 as a "Day of Remembrance of the Tragedies of Citizens of Asia Minor and the Independence Day of the Republic of Turkey." While some improvement was made in revising the wording of the original proclamation to correct historically revisionist statements, the new version continues to communicate serious factual inaccuracies and omissions. In the second letter, AHI again calls on Governor Siegelman to reconsider and withdraw this proclamation that addresses the events occurring in Turkey during 1912-1922 and thereafter since a substantial portion of the document is replete with factual inaccuracies and omissions.

Attached is AHI's follow-up letter to the Governor of Alabama regarding his proclamation and an attached exhibit (click here). The exhibit includes the text of the revised proclamation along with AHI's commentary on where the proclamation's "WHEREAS" clauses fall short.
