AHI Criticizes 60 Minutes Report On Greece And Terrorism As One-Sided

On January 10, 2002, the American Hellenic Institute (AHI) submitted a letter to Don Hewitt, Executive Producer of the CBS "60 Minutes" program, criticizing a disturbingly one-sided story by co-host Ed Bradley regarding Greece and the terrorist group November 17, aired on January 6, 2002.

While many serious allegations were waged against the Greek government's measures to combat terrorism, no air time was given to show the significant cooperation and security measures that have been implemented in recent years. With these serious oversights, "60 Minutes" presented a decidedly one-sided story.

The program showcased testimony from former U.S. Ambassador to Greece Thomas Niles and former State Department official Wayne Merry. The Greek government was portrayed as having done little to combat the threat posed by November 17. "60 Minutes" also questioned whether certain senior socialist government officials were aware of information concerning November 17. Finally, the report suggested that terrorism could pose a problem during the 2004 Athens Olympics.
