AHI Letter Congratulates Illinois Senate, Governor On Recognizing Macedonia as Hellenic

WASHINGTON, DC—On August 15, 2002, the American Hellenic Institute (AHI) sent a letter to Governor George H. Ryan of Illinois and the 59 members of the Illinois State Senate to thank them for adopting Senate Resolution 446, which proclaims that "the ancient Mace donians are Hellenes and that the inhabitants of the northern province of Greece, Macedonia, are their Hellenic Descendents." The resolution further states that "the history of Ancient Macedonia has been Hellenic for 3,000 years and continues to be today."

AHI's letter to the Governor and 59 Senators states, "By supporting Resolution 446 and adhering to historical realities, you and the Senate of Illinois have set the record straight on an issue of great importance to the Greek American community both in your state, and throughout the country."

Resolution 446, which was sponsored by Illinois' 31st District Senator Adeline Geo-Karis, has also been strongly supported by the Pan-Macedonian Association of the U.S. AHI urges Illinois residents to write to Governor Ryan and their senator to thank them for this important legislative initiative.
