WASHINGTON, DC—On March 21, 2006, the American Hellenic Institute hosted a business network luncheon on “Investing in Greek Real Estate: Opportunities in the Public and Private Sector” at Capital Hilton Hotel with guest speaker, Dr. Konstantinos Zacharopoulos, General Manager, Tourism Development Co., Athens, Greece.

The Tourism Development Company (TDC) is a wholly state-owned company, established in 1998 for the purpose of managing the public tourist property portfolio. TDC has launched a Development Project (the ‘Programme’) aimed at attracting Private Sector Capital to develop the public tourist properties, promote tourist infrastructure with emphasis on special forms of tourism in accordance with the long-term goals of the Ministry of Tourism Development, while maximizing the expected benefits from such investments. Due to the strategic location of the majority of these assets, TDC’s public tourist property portfolio is expected to attract significant investors, such as those interested in niche pockets of tourism market which can demonstrate solid growth potential (e.g. golf courses, marinas, spas, ski resorts, etc.) The Athens Olympic Games of 2004, as well as the completion of major infrastructure projects throughout Greece, delivered a huge boost to Hellenic Tourism, principally as a consequence of their important contribution to Greece’s economic development. In light of the above, the Programme will undoubtedly attract the interest of the international investment community.

Dr. Konstantinos Zacharopoulos has a background in Economics, having received his undergraduate degree with honors from the University of Athens and then completing his Masters and Ph.D. in Economics from the London School of Economics. His professional positions have included Economist of the Economic Research Division of the Bank of Greece (1981-1990); President and General Director of the Investment Bank of Greece (1991-1993); Member of the Council of Economic Advisors of the Greek Ministry of National Economy (1993); President of the Investment Portfolio Company ‘Altius’ (2000-2004; and Finance Advisor and General Manager of the Organization Committee of the ‘Athens 2004’ Olympic Games (2000-2004).

Dr. Zacharopoulos has published extensively in well known economic journals and other publications and he is frequently asked to speak at seminars, universities, and conferences on economic matters. He has been honored with awards by the University of Athens, the Cyprus government and the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Athens.
