AHI Noon Forum on “The Recent Campaign Undertaken by the Citizens of Famagusta for the Return of their Town and the Need for More Aggressive Diplomany for the Implementation of the Rule of Law in Cyprus”

WASHINGTON, DC—On October 22, 2007, AHI hosted a Noon Forum at the Hellenic House on “The Recent Campaign Undertaken by the Citizens of Famagusta for the Return of their Town and the Need for More Aggressive Diplomacy for the Implementation of the Rule of Law in Cyprus” presented by Alexis Galanos, Mayor of Famagusta and Former President of the House of Representatives of the Republic of Cyprus.

Mr. Alexis Galanos was born in 1940 and studied at the University of Cambridge ( Kings College ) where he was awarded his Masters Degree in Economics and Sociology. He also studied Law and is a Barrister at law of Inner Temple.

In 1976, he was elected Member of the House of Representatives in the Famagusta electoral district and was re-elected at the same position in 1981, 1985, 1991 and 1996. After the parliamentary elections of 1991 he was elected President of the House of Representatives from 1991-1996.

During his Parliamentary tenure he has been chairing various Parliamentary Committees including the Parliamentary Committee on “Economy and Finance” the “Foreign Affairs Committee” and the “Joint Cyprus European Affairs Committee. He has been the head for many years of the Parliamentary Delegation of Cyprus in the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe and the Inter Parliamentary Union. He was also Chairman of the Joint Parliamentary European Cyprus committee and Head of the Cyprus Parliament Delegation at OASE.

He was a member of the Board of the Central Bank of Cyprus until he was elected Mayor of Famagusta. He has been elected Mayor of the Refugee town of Famagusta since December 2006.

He is married with two sons.
