The Mayor of Thessaloniki Vassilios Papageorgopoulos Visits AHIWASHINGTON, DC—On April 6, 2009, the Mayor of Thessaloniki, Vassilios Papageorgopoulos, visited the American Hellenic Institute’s Hellenic House. He was accompanied by a delegation of twenty people consisting of members of the City Council of Thessaloniki and other mayors of near by towns surrounding Thessaloniki. While at the Hellenic House, Mayor Papageorgopoulos met with AHI Executive Director Nick Larigakis and AHI staff. The delegation was in the U.S. during the occasion of the 18th Hermes Expo International Trade Show & Exhibition Seminars in Atlantic City, NJ, April 2-6, 2009. Each year the municipality of Thessaloniki takes part in this trade show. AHI member Paul Kotrotsios is the Founder and President of the Hermes Expo. Since 1992, Hermes Expo International has made it possible for businesses from Greece, Eastern Europe, and the Mediterranean to reach ethnic markets in the United States. Over the years, fully American businesses, along with those from other nations, have come aboard to share the benefits of the Hermes Expo's successful record in the international market. During the meeting, the main discussion topics centered on: the FYROM name dispute and other issues of mutual interest. “We were very honored to have Mayor Vassilios Papageorgopoulos visit Hellenic House. He is an old friend and supporter of the AHI. I also appreciated very much the substantive and constructive discussion we had today. AHI looks forward to our continued relationship with the Mayor and our friends in Thessaloniki in pursuit of common goals and objectives,” said Nick Larigakis.
