AHI Assesses European Commission’s “Turkey 2010 Progress Report”

Institute Agrees with Report’s Findings

WASHINGTON, DC — The American Hellenic Institute (AHI) released its assessment of the European Commission’s 2010 report on progress made by Turkey in preparing for European Union membership.  The 2010 report a period ranging from early October 2009 to October 2010.

“The American Hellenic Institute agrees with the findings in the 2010 Progress Report on Turkey,” Executive Director Nick Larigakis said.

AHI Foundation Chair of Fellows Dr. Van Coufoudakis wrote AHI’s assessment.  He concluded: “Essentially, according to this report, Turkey has failed to fulfill its obligations under the EU Declaration of September, 21 2005 and the Council’s conclusions of December 2006 and 2009. It is now up to the Council to make the final finding on Turkey’s EU progress next month.”

One critique of the European Commission’s Progress Report was that it failed to note that Turkey has yet to fully comply with decisions of the European Court of Human Rights especially in the Loizidou, Xenidis-Aresti and Varnava cases, among others.
