AHI Hosts West Coast Screenings of Groundbreaking PBS Cyprus Documentary
WASHINGTON, DC — The American Hellenic Institute (AHI) took its a series of “Town Hall Screenings” of the one-hour documentary “Cyprus Still Divided: A U.S. Foreign Policy Failure” to the West Coast, April 27-29, 2011. The Crocker Art Museum, Sacramento, Calif., was the venue for the first screening, April 27. It was held in cooperation with Sofia and Angelo K. Tsakopoulos, and AHI Foundation Board Member Kyriakos Y. Tsakopoulos. “We are deeply grateful to the outstanding support provided by the Tsakopoulos Family,” said AHI President Nick Larigakis. “They are dedicated Hellenes who have immense pride in their Hellenic heritage and history. It is comforting to see that tradition continue with their son, Kyriakos, an AHI Foundation Board Member.” A second screening was held in the San Francisco Bay Area, April 28, at the Greek Orthodox Cathedral of the Ascension, Oakland, Calif., in cooperation with The Hellenic Journal and the United Hellenic American Societies (UHAS). Vicki Liviakis, anchor/reporter, KRON-TV, moderated the event. AHI President Nick Larigakis expressed AHI’s appreciation to Frosene Philips, The Hellenic Journal; Ted Laliotis, UHAS; Nick Theofanou, honorary consul general, Republic of Cyprus; and Paul Sogotis, president, AHI-California; for their support of the event. The West Coast screenings concluded in Los Angeles, April 29, at the Sheraton Gateway Hotel Los Angeles Airport. The screening was held in cooperation with AHEPA El Camino Real District 20 and the American Hellenic Council. AHI President Larigakis expressed AHI’s appreciation to AHEPA Past Supreme President Dr. James Dimitriou, AHEPA District 20 Governor John Kopatsis, Alex Mizan, executive director, American Hellenic Council; Mike Galanakis, president, American Hellenic Council; and Andreas Kyprianidis, honorary consul general, Republic of Cyprus; for their support of the event. A discussion about the documentary and the Cyprus issue featuring AHI President Larigakis and AHI Board of Directors Secretary Nicholas G. Karambelas, who contributed to the project, followed the documentary’s screening at each venue. “We thank the California communities of Sacramento, the Bay Area, and Los Angeles for supporting this event, and we deeply appreciated working in cooperation with the many Greek Americans and Greek American organizations that helped make the screening a success,” said Larigakis. “The documentary sheds light and scrutinizes U.S. foreign policy toward Cyprus surrounding the 1974 Turkish invasion. Our goal is to create awareness of the documentary’s significance and encourage communities to urge their PBS affiliates to air the program.” AHI previously hosted “Town Hall Screenings” at Clearwater, Fla., New York City, and Ohio. The documentary aired on Detroit Public Television on September 13, 2010. The documentary was made possible by the support of the American Hellenic Institute Foundation.
