AHI Highlights Article Detailing Decline of International Law in Cyprus

WASHINGTON, DC — The American Hellenic Institute (AHI) brings to your attention the article “Cyprus: The Long Decline of International Law” by Henrik R. Clausen which was published online at EuropeNews on July 21, 2011. It was published on the occasion of the 37th anniversary of Turkey’s illegal invasion and occupation of the Republic of Cyprus.

“We believe it is important to share these accounts with the community because they accurately pinpoint how Turkey has gotten away with illegal acts, in this case the invasion of a sovereign country in Cyprus, and its subsequent occupation, due to the fact that international law has not been applied,” said AHI President Nick Larigakis. “Obviously, Mr. Clausen understands the reality of the situation in Cyprus and has accurately pinpointed the failure to apply international law over the years as the reason Cyprus remains divided. It’s time for the U.S. Department of State and the U.S. Congress to acknowledge the same and call for the application of the rule of law to find a just and viable solution to the Cyprus problem.”

He added, “Since 1974, AHI has endeavored to bring the opinions of experts on the Cyprus issue to the forefront in Washington in the ongoing effort to educate members of Congress and policymakers. We strongly encourage the community to also utilize these resources to do the same as well as to share them with colleagues, friends, and family.”

Clausen’s piece provides a detailed, yet concise account of the history of Cyprus. He concludes, “The Cyprus problem is a long series of failures to uphold international law, in letter, in spirit as well as in principle, due mainly to the large powers with interests in and around Cyprus choosing political expediency over legally solid solutions.”
