AHI, Hellenic Society Prometheas Host Film Screening on Byzantium

WASHINGTON, DC — The Hellenic Society Prometheas (HSP), in cooperation with the American Hellenic Institute (AHI), hosted a screening of the documentary “Byzantium after Byzantium” on November 1, 2012, at the St. Sophia Greek Orthodox Cathedral/Frosene Education Center, Washington, DC. The 53-minute documentary is a production of the International Center for Hellenic Research located in Nice, France.

“It was a pleasure to work in cooperation with the Hellenic Society Prometheas to host this screening,” said AHI President Nick Larigakis. “It is important to support projects such as ‘Byzantium after Byzantium’ that serve to educate and enlighten audiences about the significance of our Hellenic history and its contributions to the world. We encourage the community to embrace this project, and ones similar in its content, and share it with family and friends.”

Larigakis and HSP President Lefteris Karmiris provided welcome remarks and introduced the evening’s main speaker, Dr. Erato Paris, historian and president of the International Center for Hellenic Research. Dr. Paris highlighted a new effort to produce eight half-hour films that will provide a more in-depth examination of Byzantium. Both “Byzantium after Byzantium” and the proposed eight new documentary-shorts are being planned under the auspices of the Greek Ministry of Foreign Affairs with the support of AHI and the blessing of the Ecumenical Patriarchate.

More than 120 persons attended the event, which featured a reception followed the screening.

The American Hellenic Institute is an independent non-profit Greek American public policy center that works to strengthen relations between the United States and Greece and Cyprus, and within the Greek American community.
