AHI Applauds Bilirakis’ Statement on Turkish Prime Minister’s Offensive Remark Calling Zionism a “Crime against Humanity”

WASHINGTON, DC —The American Hellenic Institute (AHI) applauds a statement issued by U.S. Rep. Gus Bilirakis (R-FL), who serves as co-chair of the Congressional Caucus on Hellenic Issues and Congressional Hellenic-Israel Alliance, which condemns a statement made by Prime Minister of Turkey Recep Tayyip Erdogan, who compared Zionism to Fascism, calling it “a crime against humanity.”

In his statement, Congressman Bilirakis said, “Prime Minister Erdogan’s statement is yet another example of the ongoing campaign to delegitimize Israel, the only continuously democratic nation in the region. False comparisons, such as this, only perpetuate extremism across the globe. Prime Minister Erdogan should immediately retract his statements.”

“We commend Congressman Bilirakis for his swift condemnation of the Turkish prime minister’s appalling statement,” said AHI President Nick Larigakis. “It is further evidence of Prime Minister Erdogan’s ongoing hostility toward Israel.  We call on Congress to express its strong disapproval of the prime minister’s statement.”

The American Hellenic Institute is an independent non-profit Greek American public policy center that works to strengthen relations between the United States and Greece and Cyprus, and within the Greek American community.
