AHI Welcomes Commentary Published by Hudson Institute

Commentary Examines Developments in Eastern Mediterranean

WASHINGTON, DC — The American Hellenic Institute (AHI) welcomes a commentary published July 3, 2013 by the Hudson Institute titled, “Will U.S. Choose the Right Side in the Eastern Mediterranean?” Seth Cropsey, a senior fellow at Hudson Institute, authored the commentary, which draws attention to the evolving three-way relationship between Greece, Israel and Cyprus and how the relationship provides an opportunity for the United States “to bolster its waning influence in the eastern Mediterranean Sea.”  The commentary also raises concern about the rise of fundamentalism in the eastern Mediterranean and Turkey’s trend to a return of Ottoman-like imperialism under Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

“We applaud the Hudson Institute for publishing Mr. Cropsey’s commentary,” said AHI President Nick Larigakis. “Mr. Cropsey raises compelling points about the merits of a quadrilateral relationship between the United States, Israel, Greece and Cyprus, especially what it could mean to NATO’s southeastern flank and to energy interests in the eastern Mediterranean.   Mr. Cropsey also keenly observes the United States and Turkey have become ‘rival powers’ in the Middle East and eastern Mediterranean; a development that President Obama has failed to recognize.”

He added, “We encourage our audience to share Mr. Cropsey’s commentary with colleagues, family and friends in the community as well as legislators.”

The American Hellenic Institute is a non-profit Greek American public policy center and think tank that works to strengthen relations between the United States and Greece and Cyprus, and within the Greek American community.
