AHI Deeply Saddened by the Passing of Former President of Cyprus Glafcos Clerides

WASHINGTON, DC —The American Hellenic Institute (AHI) mourns the passing of former President of Cyprus Glafcos Clerides, who died November 15, 2013.

“Former President Clerides played a significant role in the history of Cyprus,” AHI Founder Gene Rossides said.  “A World War Two prisoner of war who served in the RAF, he was instrumental in leading the country to independence and worked diligently, tirelessly, and passionately to reunify Cyprus.  Mr. Clerides was a tremendous public servant and a resilient leader who helped Cyprus rise from the ramifications of a devastating illegal invasion and occupation to bring the country to the brink of European Union membership.”

“We are saddened by former President Clerides’ passing, and we extend our deepest sympathies to his family and the people of Cyprus,” AHI President Nick Larigakis said. “We had the pleasure to meet with him many times in Nicosia, and we were fortunate to host him at Hellenic House on one occasion.  Each and every time Mr. Clerides expressed his appreciation for the efforts of the Diaspora community to help Cyprus.  May his memory be eternal.”

The American Hellenic Institute is a non-profit Greek American public policy center and think tank that works to strengthen relations between the United States and Greece and Cyprus, and within the Greek American community.
