AHI Welcomes Opinion Piece Published by The Wall Street Journal

Fmr. Deputy Undersecretary of Navy Examines How Greece Can Help Address Security Risks in Mediterranean Posed by ISIS

WASHINGTON, DC — The American Hellenic Institute (AHI) welcomes an opinion piece published February 23, 2015 in The Wall Street Journal titled, “When Islamic State Starts Hitting Ships.” Seth Cropsey, director, Center for American Seapower, Hudson Institute, and former deputy undersecretary of the Navy, authored the piece which raises concern about greater access to the Mediterranean by the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) and the increased risk of military conflict it poses in central and eastern Mediterranean. For deterrence to the potential for increased attacks by ISIS, Cropsey touts the United States’ agreement with Greece as demonstrated through US NSA Souda Bay at Crete as the “focal point for America’s Mediterranean naval forces”

“We applaud The Wall Street Journal for publishing Mr. Cropsey’s opinion piece,” said AHI President Nick Larigakis. “Mr. Cropsey correctly identifies Greece’s critical role in contributing to the national security of the United States and NATO allies in the region through NSA Souda Bay at Crete.  He also keenly and rightfully observes how Turkey has ended stability in the eastern Mediterranean with its incursion into Cyprus’s exclusive economic zone.”

He added, “We encourage our audience to share Mr. Cropsey’s commentary with colleagues, family and friends in the community as well as legislators.”

The American Hellenic Institute is an independent non-profit Greek American public policy center and think tank that works to strengthen relations between the United States and Greece and Cyprus, and within the Greek American community.
