AHI Mourns Passing of Former Congressman, NYU President Dr. John Brademas

WASHINGTON, DC —The American Hellenic Institute (AHI) mourns the passing of Dr. John Brademas, former United States representative from Indiana, President Emeritus of New York University, and longstanding AHI member.  He passed away on Monday, July 11, 2016. He was 89.

“We mourn greatly the passing of Dr. John Brademas,” AHI Founder Gene Rossides said.  “Dr. Brademas exemplified Hellenic ideals to the fullest extent. He excelled as a public servant, valued the importance of education and the arts, and was a true champion of the Rule of Law.  These were values instilled in him as the son of Greek immigrants.  Without John’s Capitol Hill acumen, and the respect he garnered during his service and a leader in Congress, the community’s effort to impose an arms embargo on Turkey, following Turkey’s illegal invasion and occupation of the Republic of Cyprus, would not have been a success.  We will forever be grateful for his staunch and unwavering support for the Greek American community’s policy issues.”

“Dr. Brademas will always be remembered fondly by the American Hellenic Institute and its members for his devotion to AHI, the Rule of Law, and to Hellenism for which we are deeply grateful and from which we all benefited,” AHI President Nick Larigakis said. “Our deepest sympathies and condolences are with his family.  May his memory be eternal.”

Dr. Brademas, who was the first American-born Hellene elected to Congress, was a recipient of the Hellenic Heritage National Public Service Award.  The former Majority Whip also keynoted and addressed several AHI forums, conferences, and events.

The American Hellenic Institute is a non-profit Greek American think-tank and public policy center that works to strengthen relations between the United States and Greece and Cyprus, and within the Greek American community.
