Northern Virginia Kicks-off 2012 “Town Hall Screenings” of Groundbreaking PBS Cyprus Documentary

Screened in Fourteenth Major Metropolitan Area

WASHINGTON, DC — The American Hellenic Institute (AHI) took its series of “Town Hall Screenings” of the one-hour documentary “Cyprus Still Divided: A U.S. Foreign Policy Failure” to Falls Church, Va., January 18, 2012, bringing the total number of cities across North America in which the documentary has been viewed to 14.

Founders Hall at St. Katherine’s Greek Orthodox Church was the venue for the screening.  A discussion about the documentary and the Cyprus issue featuring AHI President Larigakis and AHI Board of Directors Secretary Nicholas G. Karambelas, Esq., followed. Attorney Arthur Dimopoulos, publisher, Odyssey magazine, moderated the panel discussion, and newly-elected St. Katherine’s Parish Council President Jim Stoucker offered opening remarks. Olympia Neocleous, deputy chief of mission, Embassy of the Republic of Cyprus, was also present. The event was held in cooperation with the Col. Peter N. Derzis AHEPA Chapter 438, Arlington, Va.

AHI is grateful for the efforts of Chapter 438 for helping to organize the screening and thanks Moderator Dimopoulos, Parish Council President Stoucker, and AHEPA Chapter 438 President Angelo S. Toutsi for their assistance that helped to make the event a success.

“The documentary sheds light and scrutinizes U.S. foreign policy toward Cyprus surrounding the 1974 Turkish invasion,” said AHI President Larigakis, who is a member of AHEPA Chapter 438.  “We are deeply grateful to the outstanding support provided by the Greek American community of northern Virginia. It was a pleasure to work in cooperation with AHEPA, which is dedicated to raising awareness about the Cyprus issue in the community. Our goal is to encourage communities to urge their PBS affiliates to air the documentary.”

The documentary has aired on Maryland Public Television (October 17, 2011) and Detroit Public Television (September 13, 2010). The documentary was made possible by the support of the American Hellenic Institute Foundation.
