PBS Cyprus Documentary Town Hall Screenings Return to West Coast and Florida in AprilSan Diego, Seattle, Hollywood, Fla. Communities Host ScreeningsWASHINGTON, DC — The American Hellenic Institute (AHI) 2012 series of “Town Hall Screenings” of the one-hour documentary “Cyprus Still Divided: A U.S. Foreign Policy Failure” returned to Florida and the West Coast with showings in Hollywood, Fla., April 1; San Diego, April 17; and Seattle, April 19. In Hollywood, Fla., the Town Hall Screening was held at St. George Greek Orthodox Church. Tim Tsotsias, Perry Monioudis and Michael Reppas organized the event, which was held in cooperation with St. George and AHEPA Chapter 523, Hollywood, Fla. Former AHI President and current Board of Directors Member Aleco Haralambides led the discussion. The venue for the San Diego screening was the University of California, San Diego Faculty Club, La Jolla, Calif. The event was held in cooperation with the Hellenic Cultural Society of San Diego and North San Diego County AHEPA Chapter 505. A discussion about the documentary and the Cyprus issue featuring AHI President Nick Larigakis followed. Dr. Thomas Gallant, Nicholas Family Endowed Chair, professor of Modern Greek History, University of California San Diego, moderated the discussion. George Karetas helped organize the event. Also attending was: George Koulaxes, founding member, Hellenic Cultural Society; Alex and Jeanette Rigopoulos and John and Renee Grevas, members of AHEPA Chapter 505; and Professors Harry Anthony and Georges Anagnostopoulos, University of California, San Diego. In Seattle, the event was held at St. Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church in cooperation with AHEPA Chapter 177, The Hellenes of the Northwest, Greek-American Historical Museum of Washington State, and Daughters of Penelope Alcides Chapter 160. A discussion with AHI President Larigakis followed. Dr. Nektaria Klapaki, University of Washington Hellenic Studies Program, moderated. Aspasia (Sia) Bartell, a second-year MBA student from the University of Washington, Foster School of Business, who participated on the 2011 American Hellenic Institute Foundation (AHIF) Foreign Policy Trip to Greece and Cyprus, and Cliff Argue, helped organize the event and the AHEPA and Daughters of Penelope chapters hosted the reception. In attendance were: Dr. Ted Kaltsounis, professor emeritus, who was the first director of the University of Washington Hellenic Studies program; and Dr. George Stamatoyannopoulos, adjunct professor of Pathology, University of Washington; John T. John, a prominent member of the community who heads the Hellenes of the Northwest that started the Hellenic Studies program at the University of Washington; John Nicon of the Greek American Historical Museum; and Daughters of Penelope Chapter President Sophia Zervas Berg. “The documentary sheds light and scrutinizes U.S. foreign policy toward Cyprus surrounding the 1974 Turkish invasion,” said AHI President Larigakis. “We are deeply grateful to the outstanding support provided by the Greek American communities of San Diego and Seattle. It was a pleasure to work in cooperation with them, and we thank the individuals who attended and expressed a commitment to raising awareness about the Cyprus issue in the community. Our goal is to encourage communities to urge their PBS affiliates to air the documentary.” The documentary has aired on Maryland Public Television (October 17, 2011) and Detroit Public Television (September 13, 2010). AHI previously hosted “Town Hall Screenings” at Clearwater, Fla., New York City, Ohio, Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Sacramento; and Portland, Ore., and Phoenix, Mexico City, Mexico, New Jersey, Chicago and St. Louis, Norfolk, Va, northern Virginia, Miami, and Atlantic City.
